V&A DDW24 ‘Recrafting the Internet’ talks & Internet ‘care’ label workshop

In September 2024 hiCraft delivered a series of talks investigating how ecological and craft thinking provide an alternative vision for a healthier internet.

Talk 1: Is the Internet a monoculture?
Saturday 21st September, 13.00 to 14.00

This panel discussion used ecological metaphors to explore ways in which the current structure of the Internet can be understood and critiqued.

Talk 2: Crafting an Internet for Everyone
Saturday 21st September, 14.30 to 15.30

The panel for talk 2 explored how craft principles — like localism, provenance, and care — can inspire more humane and inclusive digital experiences, and present alternative visions for a more empathetic and accessible Internet.

HiCraft exhibition

Alongside the Care Label workshop and panel discussions we presented a range of artifacts created by both commissioned craftspeople and the investigators on the project. Many of these were the results of collaborations between makers and creative technologists the details of the development of these works can be found on ‘craft investigations’ pages.

Design your own Internet Care label workshop

In this workshop, at the Project Reception of the Learning Centre at the V&A, we took inspiration from the visual language of clothing labels to reflect on and visualise some of the current concerns about the way we connect digitally.

As part of Digital Design Weekend DDW24 participants were invited to design and take away your own personal internet care label. Captured here are responses to the Care label making from some of our participants.

Visitors to the DDW created collaged designs from resources we provided but often added extra imagery and had written augmentation that playfully and creatively expressed their feelings and thoughts.
